European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
