The global fast-food chain has removed a holiday commercial made with Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant public disapproval.

The brief film was produced with the help of AI video tools and was first published online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, commenters criticized the use of AI in the advert. Several called it "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This moment represents an valuable lesson as we investigate the proper use of AI," commented a statement from the company.

The advert was developed for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed various scenarios that might go awry during the Christmas break, using the theme "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Movement of AI Commercials

Adverts that feature generative AI have emerged as a rising trend among large corporations, particularly for the Christmas season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly launched back-to-back AI-created holiday commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because videos made with current AI video tools are susceptible to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also provoked concerns about automation in the advertising industry, with some commenters stating it might reduce opportunities for actors.

Defense from the Production Company

Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

She stated, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then edited in post-production "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This was not an experiment," she commented. "We consider it a film."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the sentiment for some AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday spot from another major brand reportedly received a significant "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, several companies have likewise encountered scrutiny for using the technique in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some called "lazy" and "disturbing".

The episode highlights the ongoing conversation within the advertising and production sectors about the trade-off between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
