Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
